Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute

TAFIRI maintains a specialized fleet capable of deep-water limnological and marine surveys, essential for monitoring fish stocks and water quality.

Mwanza – Lake Victoria
RV Explorer is a key research vessel stationed on Lake Victoria. It is equipped with advanced hydroacoustic systems used to estimate fish biomass, alongside environmental monitoring tools for assessing water quality. The vessel also supports bottom trawling operations critical for fisheries stock assessment and sustainable management.
Kigoma – Lake Tanganyika
Operating on Lake Tanganyika, RV Echoes plays a vital role in the study of deep-water pelagic ecosystems. The vessel supports long-term monitoring of the lake's unique biodiversity, contributing to research on one of the world's second-deepest freshwater lakes.

Near-shore & Field Operations
TAFIRI operates a fleet of medium-size fiberglass boats, typically ranging from 7 to 11 meters in length. These vessels are used for near-shore sampling, pollution monitoring, and transporting researchers to remote cage culture sites and other field research locations.
