Themes We Serve

FISHERIES,GOVERNANCE & BLUE ECONOMYsolutions.

/01
Climate Change and Sustainable Financing
  • This sub-theme addresses the impacts of climate change on aquatic ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal communities, alongside innovative financing solutions to build resilience. Topics include climate adaptation strategies, carbon sequestration in aquatic systems, risk mitigation tools, blue carbon initiatives, climate-smart fisheries and aquaculture, and sustainable investment mechanisms that support environmental and socio-economic resilience.
/02
Aquatic Ecosystems and Ecology
  • This sub-theme addresses the structure, function, and dynamics of marine and freshwater ecosystems. It encourages research on ecosystem health, biodiversity, trophic interactions, habitat degradation, invasive species, and ecosystem restoration. Emphasis is placed on advancing ecological monitoring tools, ecosystem-based management approaches, and science-driven conservation strategies that safeguard aquatic biodiversity while supporting sustainable resource use.
/03
Digital Oceans and Lake
  • This sub-theme focuses on the transformative role of digital technologies in aquatic resource management. Topics include remote sensing, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, digital monitoring systems, smart fisheries management platforms, and real-time ocean and lake observation networks. The theme highlights how digital innovation enhances decision-making, transparency, traceability, compliance monitoring, and sustainable management of aquatic environments.
/04
Blue Economy and Ocean Governance
  • This sub-theme explores innovative approaches to advancing the Blue Economy while strengthening ocean and inland water governance frameworks. It focuses on sustainable resource utilization, marine spatial planning, policy coherence, transboundary water management, and inclusive governance systems that balance economic growth with ecosystem integrity. Contributions are invited on institutional reforms, legal instruments, financing mechanisms, and regional cooperation models that enhance resilience, equity, and long-term sustainability of aquatic resources

TAFIRI history
[01 - 01]

Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) was established by the Act of Parliament No. 6 of 1980 to promote, conduct, and co-ordinate fisheries research in Tanzania. The idea of establishing TAFIRI came after the collapse of the East African Community in 1977.

The EAC previously handled fisheries research and development. After the Community's collapse, fisheries matters were transferred to the Fisheries Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Since this department was not mandated for research, TAFIRI was established to fill this gap.

We have come of age, constantly innovating at every step to ensure that our founding mission of promoting marine science and management for the development of the TAFIRI ORG-remains as relevant today as it did many years ago.
